What is AEM?
Activated Effective Microorganisms (AEM) are a mixture of aerobic and facultative microorganisms that are activated (woken up) and can be added directly to your lawn, garden or compost pile. Aerobic microorganisms are beneficial and are the basis of the soil food web; facultative microorganisms can function in aerobic or anaerobic conditions are an necessary for turning a system around.
When to use
AEM will be the hardest working tool you have. Add to the soil as soon as it is thawed to introduce fresh microorganisms and get them start to break down organic debris.
- On the lawn at the beginning of spring and again at the end of the summer
- On the lawn when spreading fresh seed
- In the garden when planting or when plants start to show fruit
- Soak your garden seeds before planting
- Add to your compost pile every time you add new inputs
- In your containers periodically over the course of the growing season
How to use
Using AEM as easy as watering. Dilute 60 ml (1/4 cup) to 6 L and add directly to the soil. Dispersion is best if added to a watering can or sprayer. Rainwater is friendliest to microorganisms, consider this instead of tap water when possible.
